Tree pruning (also called trimming in some contexts) involves selectively removing specific branches or parts of a tree while keeping the tree alive and intact. The primary goals are to improve the tree’s health, structure, safety, and appearance without drastic changes.
Key purposes of pruning:
• Remove dead, diseased, damaged, or weak branches (the “Four D’s”: dead, diseased, dying, defective) to prevent spread of issues and reduce fall risks.
• Thin the crown to allow better airflow and sunlight penetration, reducing disease and improving overall vitality.
• Raise the canopy (crown raising) for clearance under the tree (e.g., for paths, vehicles, or views).
• Reduce size or shape (crown reduction) to fit space or direct growth away from structures/powerlines.
• Train young trees for strong structure (e.g., establishing a central leader).
Benefits: Promotes long-term tree health, enhances natural form, increases light/fruit production, and prevents future problems. Pruning is often routine maintenance.
When storms, high winds, or unexpected tree failure strike, you need a fast, reliable arborist you can trust. Our emergency tree services are available to respond quickly across the Coffs Coast, helping homeowners, businesses, and property managers secure their property and prevent further damage.

Tree removal is the complete dismantling and extraction of an entire tree, from canopy to stump (often including stump grinding). It’s a last-resort option when the tree poses unacceptable risks or is beyond saving.
Key purposes of removal:
• Eliminate hazardous trees (e.g., leaning, diseased, dead, root-damaged, or storm-compromised) that could fall and damage property, powerlines, or people.
• Clear space for construction, landscaping, or sunlight.
• Remove invasive, pest-infested, or declining trees that can’t be rehabilitated through pruning.
About Us
We’re a family-owned arborist business proudly servicing the Mid North Coast, now based in beautiful Emerald Beach. As a family of five with three energetic boys, life for us revolves around the outdoors, hard work, and community.
Originally from the Central Coast, we built and operated a successful arborist business — The Tree Monkey — for over 15 years. During that time, we earned a strong reputation for quality workmanship, reliability, and honest service. Our clients trusted us because we treated every property with care and every job with professionalism.
A few years ago, we made the move north to the stunning Coffs Coast, drawn by the lifestyle, natural beauty, and community feel. We also spent a year in Switzerland reconnecting with my wife’s side of the family — an incredible experience that reminded us of what truly matters: family, balance, and building something meaningful for the long term.
Now we’re here to stay at Emerald Beach.
With more than 20 years of hands-on experience in tree removal and arborist services, we bring knowledge, safety, and precision to every job. Whether it’s a routine removal, careful pruning, or urgent storm response, we approach each project with the same commitment to quality that built our reputation.
When we’re not working, you’ll likely find our whole family down at the beach surfing. In fact, you might have seen us out there already.
We’re proud to be part of the Mid North Coast community and look forward to helping you with safe, reliable, and professional tree services.

FAQs
“What are the signs my tree needs pruning?”
Pruning helps keep your trees healthy, safe, and well-shaped. You may need professional tree pruning if you notice:
Dead or dying branches
Branches hanging over your roof, driveway, or powerlines
Limbs rubbing or crossing each other
A dense, overgrown canopy blocking light and airflow
Storm-damaged or cracked branches
Uneven or unbalanced growth
Regular pruning improves tree health, reduces safety risks, and prevents costly damage. If you’re unsure, our experienced Mid North Coast arborists can assess your trees and recommend the right solution.
"How much does tree removal cost?"
The cost depends on the size, location, and complexity of the tree. Factors such as access, proximity to buildings, and disposal requirements all affect pricing. We offer free quotes across the Mid North Coast.
"Are you fully insured?"
Yes, we are fully insured for all tree removal and arborist work across the Mid North Coast.
Our insurance covers public liability and property damage, giving you peace of mind that your home, business, and surrounding property are protected while work is carried out. With more than 20 years of experience in professional tree removal, safety is always our top priority.
If required, we’re happy to provide proof of insurance before commencing any job.
“Do I need council approval to remove a tree?”
Yes — in the Coffs Harbour City Council area, you may need approval before removing certain trees, especially if they are native vegetation or protected under local planning rules. Council permission (a Tree Permit or Development Application) can be required for the removal of native trees or vegetation where planning controls apply.
However, not all tree removal requires approval. Non-native trees or vegetation that is not regulated may be removed without a permit, but it’s always best to check with Council first to avoid fines.
Before removing a tree, we recommend:
Contacting City of Coffs Harbour Council to check if a permit is required
Using Council’s Vegetation Removal Fact Sheet or Tree Permit Application form
Consulting an experienced arborist (like us) who can assess whether approval is needed and assist with applications if required
Council can also require compensatory planting (new trees) as part of the approval.
